Nodules

Nodules

Nodules are lumps of excess tissue in the thyroid gland. The gland may develop more than one nodule. The reason for their development cannot be pinpointed yet, but they are more common in people who have experienced therapeutic radiation to their head or neck during their childhood for problems relating to acne or swollen tonsils. The majority of the time, nodules do not affect the hormone production process and are non-symptomatic although they may be felt from outside the neck. Most nodules are benign, but occasionally one may be malignant.
